What are the Cambridge Technicals?

Launched for first teaching in September 2016, the Cambridge Technicals are vocational qualifications at Level 3 for students aged 16+ who prefer to study IT in a context that allows them to learn and be assessed in ways that are practical and relevant to the IT Sector.

Why study OCR Cambridge Technicals in IT? 

This qualification is designed to give learners a range of specialist knowledge and transferable skills in the context of applied IT, providing them with the opportunity to enter an apprenticeship, move directly into employment or progress to a related Higher Education (HE) course.

How will I be assessed?

There are a wide range of centre assessed units with practical and wider project-based assessment opportunities, as well as examined units on the Fundamentals of IT and Global Information.

Learners will follow the Application Developer pathway.

It is a requirement that employers are engaged in the delivery of this qualification.

How is the Course graded?

The units are graded Pass, Merit and Distinction.

What are the entry requirements?

The following requirements are essential as a foundation for this course, either

  • Grade 4 or above GCSE Computer Science
  • Level 2 Pass or above in Cambridge Nationals IT or Creative iMedia Certificate
  • Equivalencies in other vocational qualifications or high points scores in other subjects

What skills will I gain from studying ICT?

Students will gain an insight into the IT Sector and investigate the pace of technological change, IT Infrastructure and the flow of information on a global scale and the importance of legal and security considerations. Students will also develop professional, personal and social skills through interaction with peers, stakeholders and clients, as well as theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin these skills. The course will enhance learners’ knowledge, skills and understanding with respect to the development of specifications and the designing, building or testing of applications.

Career Opportunities

Cambridge Technicals provide a strong base for progression to university, apprenticeships or work and are recognised for UCAS tariff points.

The course is equivalent to one A Level.
